Sony Ericsson W715

The Sony Ericsson W715 is exclusive to Vodafone, and can be thought of as either the upcoming W705 with added GPS support, or the new G705 with added Walkman functionality.

Representing the 30th Walkman branded handset from Sony Ericsson, the W715 comes with all the usual multimedia features that you would expect, plus Vodafone's Find&Go navigation service. There's a 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.4" QVGA display, expandable memory and stereo Bluetooth, all wrapped up in a fairly lightweight 98 gram slider package. Of course, there's a web browser, email client and all the other features that a Sony Ericsson phone in this class has.

Other notable features are support for HSUPA (high speed uploads) in addition to HSDPA and normal 3G. The W715 also comes with WiFi support.

It's a promising looking device - but then so are the W705 and G705 handsets, which are more-or-less identical. It does show how muddled Sony Ericsson's range is when there are three models in the range where common sense might suggest just having the one.

Sony Ericsson say that the W715 should be available during Q1 2009, although no pricing details are available at present.

The Sony Cybershot G3 is the first point and shoot camera (in fact the first camera period) on which you can browse the internet. YouTube and Photobucket are going to get a whole lot of new users….

The Sony Cybershot G3 comes with WiFi and a built in browser meaning to u can access the web wherever you may be happily snapping away. It even has free access to all AT&T hotspots until 2012 so you can do plenty of web browsing on the cheap. The 3.5 inch touchscreen isn’t exactly the largest to be viewing the web on but if it can be done with an iPhone…..

Back on the camera side of things (after all, the web browser is just a side show), the Sony Cybershot G3 packs 10 mega-pixels and 4GB of built in storage and you can increase that by slotting in a memory stick. Other features include Sony’s Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection and Smile Shutter.

The Sony Cybershot G3 camera can be yours for a handsome $500 now. All other Cyber-Shots should prepare for an upgrade methinks…

Sony shows off flexible full-color OLED screen

Sony came out a ultra-thin OLED TVs, and now the company takes that tech a step further with a flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display that could end up in thinner, lighter or softer electronic devices. This 2.5-inch prototype display is just .3-mm thick, and its flexible full-color display has a resolution of 169x120.

you'll notice that it's not as easily bent as a piece of paper, but it's certainly less rigid than current LEDs.

Sony's not the first to roll out a full-color flexible OLED screen. LG Philips showed its 4-inch OLED last week, with an even higher resolution of 320x240. However, both these products are in the early prototype stage, and neither company has announced shipping products using the technology yet

Windows 7 Beta

The new operating system will deliver faster boot times and better power management than previous Windows versions. What Microsoft claim Windows 7 Beta is more for power management system - an enhanced sleep-idle feature for the computer's display, which typically consumes the most power in a laptop PC.

"When the system is mostly idle…there is no need to be running the processor in the maximum performance mode [so] the processor voltage and frequency can be reduced to a lower value to save power," DeWhitt wrote. "Similar, the hard disk drive and a variety of other devices can be placed in low-power modes or turned off completely to save power when not in use."

Microsoft is building on its previous investments with the Windows 7 device power enhancements.

"several investments in the area of device power management including enhancements to USB device classes to enable selective suspend across a broad range of devices including audio, biometrics, scanners and smart cards…[to] enable more energy efficient PC designs"

The rollout of Windows 7 Beta, Microsoft announced a Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta release on Wednesday. Both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 share the same codebase kernel.
